BROOKLYN WOMEN TAKE THE POLITICAL LEAD

The White House Project’s “Go Lead!” Training Program Kicks Off
September 22nd at Brooklyn’s Borough Hall
 Press Conference

New York - Today, The White House Project and Brooklyn College announced their partnership to bring the award-winning Go Lead training program for women throughout Kings County.  On Tuesday, September 22nd from 6-8 PM, at Borough Hall, the College will hold a kick-off event and press conference, featuring Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz, Yvonne Graham and Dr. Karen Gould, the new and first woman president of Brooklyn College.

Go Lead is a unique daylong event which aims to inspire young women to enter the world of politics by teaching innovative skills and strategies needed to run for office. The overall goal is to foster a positive environment in which young women can actively contribute to and transform the political arena.

“We need a massive effort to recruit, train, and support women running for office,” said Marie Wilson, President and Founder of The White House Project. “Go Lead empowers women to be at the forefront of politics by providing innovative skills, strategies, and networks for leadership.”

Go Lead will serve as the foundation for young, smart, ambitious women of Brooklyn College to pursue promising futures in politics. Historically, the campus has been a place where great ideas begin and prolific figures emerge – including Shirley Chisholm, the first African-American woman elected to U.S. Congress, who will be honored on November 24th at the College.

“Now is the perfect time to embrace change and to get involved with such a strong collaborative effort that aims to better women and society overall,” said Professor Namita Manohar, Coordinator of the Women’s Studies Program at Brooklyn College.

Go Lead will take place at Brooklyn College on January 8th, 2010, from 8AM – 8PM.  Women who are currently enrolled at Brooklyn College are encouraged to apply; for more information, please contact Barbara Winslow, Brooklyn College Women’s Studies Program, bwinslow@brooklyn.cuny.edu; Janeen Ettienne at jettienne@thewhitehouseproject.org
