The 2009 EPIC AwardsOverview Seven years ago, The White House Project created the EPIC (Enhancing Perceptions in Culture) Awards to bring together prominent business, philanthropic, political and entertainment leaders to honor innovators who bring positive images of women’s leadership to the American public. The 2009 EPIC Awards have been scheduled for March 30th, 2009 at the United Nations Delegates Dining Room in New York. The theme of the EPIC Awards is “Add Women. Change History.” In this groundbreaking era for the visibility and vision of women’s leadership, we are turning our attention to democracy and the media, and their impact on the next generation. We are proud to be honoring Voto Latino for the outstanding impact that they have had in the last four years on the next generation of Latinas. Their work reflects our own values and our goal of bringing traditionally unheard voices to the table. Rosario Dawson, Co-Founder and María Teresa Petersen, Executive Director will accept the award. First launched in 1992 and now in its fifth presidential election cycle, Lifetime Network’s Every Woman Counts Campaign will receive an EPIC Award for their pioneering public service campaign dedicated to encouraging women to speak out on the issues they care about most, vote and run for office. Andrea Wong, CEO and President, will accept the award. We also plan to honor Chief Judge Judith Kaye for her pioneering commitment to the New York Courts, and she has the date on her calendar. Over the years we have been honored to share the stage with EPIC honorees and presenters including Geena Davis, Abigail Disney, Eve Ensler, Melissa Etheridge, Tovah Feldshuh, Julie Foudy, Anita Hill, Ambassador Swanee Hunt, Kathleen Kennedy, Billie Jean King, Geraldine B. Laybourne, Sheila Nevins, Mariane Pearl, Marjane Satrapi, Jeff Skoll, Julie Taymor, Kathleen Turner, Amber Valletta and Diane von Furstenberg. The EPIC Awards supports the work of The White House Project, a nonpartisan organization committed to enhancing public perceptions of women leaders and advancing a richly diverse, critical mass of women into leadership positions. Our nuts-and-bolts political leadership training program, Vote, Run, Lead has given over 6,000 women the tools to run for elected office and become community leaders. This year’s groundbreaking presidential campaign has had a dramatic impact on the number of women – particularly young women – determined to live a political life, and we have seen a more than 50% increase in registrations for our trainings. Your involvement in the EPIC Awards is a testament to your commitment to this mission, the women we serve, and the communities that their leadership will impact for generations.
